ANDY WARHOL X AI WEI WEI

Mr. Gumbatron had the privilege to attend an exclusive preview of Andy Warhol x Ai Wei Wei Exhibition days before the exhibition was opened to the public thanks to Mercedes Benz Australia.

This major international exhibition features two of the most significant artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: Andy Warhol and Ai Wei Wei.

"Presenting the work of both artists, the exhibition explores modern and contemporary art, life and cultural politics through the activities of two exemplary figures – one of whom represents twentieth century modernity and the ‘American century’; and the other contemporary life in the twenty-first century and what has been heralded as the ‘Chinese century’ to come"

The most intriguing facet of the exhibition is the juxtaposition of Andy's travels in China, and the time Ai Wei Wei spent in the United States of America. Although two very unique and different artists the tensions and complimentary nature of the two artists is intelligent and at times witty.

Ai Wei Wei is arguably of my favourite contemporary artist and a big personal inspiration to myself. I first came across Ai Wei Wei's work as an architect of FAKE Architecture, but have since then I have become intrigued about his ideologies and means of free expression & art. Ai Wei Wei is a modern renaissance man, an architect, an antiques specialist/buyer, carpenter, political activist, painter, artist...the list goes on.

Every since this collaboration was announced by The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), I have stood by my belief that Andy Warhol x Ai Wei Wei will be the BEST exhibition the NGV is likely to ever host in my lifetime. It did not disappoint.

This is one not to be missed for all the culturally intrigued readers. Andy Warhol x Ai Wei Wei Exhibition is on the Ground Level of The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International, The exhibition runs from 11th December 2015 Until the 24th April 2016.
