KITH and New Balance we've seen before but KITH, New Balance, and Frank Lloyd Wright? That's a new one. But here we are, beholding Ronnie Fieg's "Broadacre City" New Balance 998, inspired by the legendary architect's sketches for a conceptual city of the future.
The Ronnie Fieg x Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation x New Balance 998 "Broadcare City Capsule" is a collaboration between fashion designer Ronnie Fieg, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and New Balance. The sneakers pay homage to Frank Lloyd Wright's utopian concept for Broadacre City and celebrate the 35th anniversary of the New Balance 998 silhouette.
Ronnie Fieg presents the MADE in USA 998, featuring a colorway and design inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's visionary Broadacre City concept. Broadacre City is not a city at all, but a reimagining of how Wright envisioned people organizing themselves outside of dense urban environments; opting to live at a smaller scale among farms and forests, connecting with the land and with each other. This concept was Wright’s way to address inequality, to distribute and use resources fairly, and to be gentler on the Earth. Although introduced in 1935, these ideas were far ahead of their time and are more relevant today than ever.
Broadacre City
Frank Lloyd Wright envisioned an evolution of urban space, driven by technological advances in communication and transportation. The Broadacre City concept represented a modern, decentralized type of city planning, where autonomous vehicles and expansive green spaces would maximize the amount of space, beauty, and freedom available to the individual citizen.
2023 marks the 35th anniversary of the 998, which introduced ABZORB cushioning for the first time in 1993. This legacy of engineering innovation makes the 998 a perfect canvas for a design based on the work of the visionary architect. The MADE in USA 998 features a classic mesh upper, with pigskin suede and hairy suede overlay panels adding a varied sense of texture.
