JSMP COUTURE EXPERIENCE
Mr. Gumbatron was fortunate to be introduced to Jasmin Pang, the stylish founder of JSMP through a close friend and existing client of JSMP, after brief catchup at a popup event that she was hosting (which also involved Japanese Whisky), soon we both realized that we shared many common interests in all things design, fashion as well as the simple and finer things in life. Later Jasmin approached me to collaborate on a new collection together as part of JSMP, of course, I accepted the invitation.
The experience began with a face-to-face measurement appointment, with the current pandemic situation, notable measures to ensure their clients feel comfortable, I noticed a bottle of MIDST Hydra Sanitizer on the side table (along with a curated selection of gins and beautiful handmade glassware). Don’t be shy, Jasmin kindly prepared me a Whisky Highball as we began my consultation.
The measurement appointment involved no short than fourteen unique body measurements taken with great accuracy. My odd preferences were then shared including how I prefer my left sleeve/cuff shorter than the other by half an inch, as well as some other general proportion preferences of mine (think Leonardo Da Vinci’s golden ratio) JSMP is all about bespoke, and my requests we met with a beam.
Sitting in the lounge of JSMP’s showroom, we exchanged ideas and began brainstorming, like a workshop but more casually, it was more akin to open dialogue to understand what both of us wanted to achieve. After ideas were exchanged, we opted to design a jacket and then the real creative process. began, Due to both our busy schedules, in true digital nomad style, we shared inspiration and design detail cues and sketches over whats app and kept the dialogue in check.
A few weeks later, JSMP had prepared the initial design and I went in for the first fitting on a jacket prepared in muslin cloth. Jasmin and I further discussed the design and made changes on the jacket in-situ with the tailor, this involved marking on the cloth directly as well as cutting and adjusting the seams whilst I was wearing it. During this session, I was presented with an assortment of fabric sample books, to which I decided on an Olive green colored cotton-linen blend from Albini 1876 by Thomas and Mason which offered sound breathability as a mid-light fabric perfect for Hong Kong’s humid weather and suited well to the structure and design of the jacket we created.
One final fitting followed a few days later and then #001 of the jacket was ready later that week.
I proudly present to you The Lex Jacket.
”The Lex Jacket features wide lapels and pleated details to reflect Lex’s motto: “Dress well. Drink well. Live well.”. I want this jacket to embed his unique style and aesthetic, hence the details not only reflect style but the craftsmanship to perfection too” says Jasmin.
The Lex Jacket is bold in its silhouette, featuring wide 4 3/4” lapels, a gentle confidence is evoked through a twin pleated detail that is vertically directional from the shoulder to the patch pocket. A Neapolitan shoulder further adds softness whilst concealed sleeve buttons complete the relaxed sartorial elegance look suitable for business meetings and casual settings; perfect for fall/summer.
The Lex Jacket is available from Atelier JSMP here.
